The KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board’s Law Enforcement Unit and members of the SAPS Provincial Gambling Project Unit have confiscated a total of 90 machines during their recent operation aimed at cracking down on illegal gambling in the province.

On the 7th of October, 2005, these units conducted a joint operation in the town of Escourt. The operation was based upon information received that there were illegal gambling operations being conducted from the premises where amusement machines were available for play for minors.

Two premises where amusement machines were operated were raided and following results were achieved:

-A total of 32 illegal gambling machines were found to be operational on both premises.
-A further 58 illegal gambling machines were found in storage at one of the premises.
-The machines are used for gambling purposes by local residents and are often played by children who visit the premises to play on amusement machines.

Investigations are still underway to determine where the machines originated from.

Criminal charges relating to illegal gambling and the possession of illegal gambling devices are being instituted against two local businessmen. Illegal gambling results in the exposure of minors to gambling, and gambling problems due to the fact that the environment is not regulated.

The machines that were confiscated will be retained as exhibits until the cases have been finalised.
